Tip: read the passage out loud and ask one simple question to help children respond with faith.

Sometimes we might think that to please God we have to do something big.

Maybe we believe we must always behave well, help a lot, give something special, or prove that we are good so that God is happy with us.

But then an important question arises:

Does God only look at what we do and give... or does He also look at our heart?

The Bible teaches us something beautiful: God looks much deeper. He sees our intentions, our sincerity, our love, and the way we approach Him.

And even when we feel that we have been distracted, that we have stopped seeking Him, or that our heart has drifted away a little, God continues to invite us to return.

God looks beyond what we can offer

In the Old Testament, the people of Israel presented offerings before God.

These offerings had a special meaning and were part of the way the people approached the Lord.

But God was not only interested in what a person could place before the altar.

God also looked at the heart of the one who approached.

We can give something small with much love, obedience, and sincerity. We could also do something seemingly great while our heart is far from God.

That is why, for the Lord, it is not only importantwhat we give, but alsohow our heart is when we come to Him.

The golden calf: when the heart turns away from God

The story of the golden calf shows us how easy it can be for our hearts to become distracted.

While Moses was on the mountain talking with God, the people began to grow impatient. Instead of continuing to trust in the Lord, they looked for something visible in which to place their security.

They built a golden calf and began to worship it.

God said about them:

“They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them.”Exodus 32:8

The problem was not only that golden statue.

Something deeper had happened:

The heart of the people had begun to turn away from God.

They had let fear, impatience, and the need to feel secure take the place of trust in the Lord.

This can happen to us today as well.

We probably don’t build a golden calf, but we can start trusting more in other things than in God.

It could be money, the things we have, the opinion of others, our own plans, or anything that ends up taking the place in our heart that belongs to the Lord.

God desires something much more important than our possessions.

He wants our heart.

Can Jesus help me return to God?

Yes. đź’›

Jesus can help you return to God.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t prayed for days, if you’ve felt distracted, if you’ve made mistakes, or if you feel your heart is no longer as close to God as before.

You can talk to Jesus just as you are.

You don’t need to hide your mistakes or pretend everything is fine.

You can say to Him:

“Jesus, I have been distracted. I have made mistakes. I want to be close to you again.”

Jesus knows your heart and lovingly welcomes those who come sincerely.

Returning to God doesn’t mean arriving perfect.

It means recognizing that we need Him and deciding again to trust in Him.

When God looks at your heart

God can see things that others cannot see.

He sees when you help someone without expecting anything in return.

He sees when you decide to obey even though it is difficult.

He sees when you share something small with much love.

He sees when you admit that you did something wrong.

And He also sees when you come to Him saying:

“Lord, here is my heart.”

Maybe you think you have very little to offer God.

But remember this:

God is not waiting for you to do something impressive to love you.

He wants you to come to Him with humility, truth, and faith.

How do I know if my heart is drifting away from God?

Drifting away from God does not always happen suddenly. Many times it starts with small decisions.

Here are some signs we can observe.

We stop praying

Prayer is our conversation with God.

When we stop talking to Him for a long time, little by little we can begin to feel farther away.

We stop listening to the Word of God

The Bible helps us know who God is and teaches us the path we should follow.

If we stop listening to His Word, other voices can begin to guide our decisions.

We let fear rule more than faith

Feeling fear does not mean that we lack faith.

But when fear starts to decide everything for us, we can forget that God is still by our side.

We seek security in things that cannot save us.

The people of Israel put their trust in a golden calf.

We too must ask ourselves:

What am I putting my trust in?

Material things, people, and our own plans can be important, but none can take the place of God.

How can I return to God?

Returning can start with something very simple.

Talk to Jesus

Tell Him how you feel.

You don't need complicated words.

You can speak to Him as you would to someone who loves you and wants to listen to you.

Ask for forgiveness

If you know you have done something that displeases God, acknowledge it.

Asking for forgiveness does not mean hiding from God.

It means running to Him.

Open your heart

Tell Him your fears, worries, doubts, and mistakes.

God already knows them, but He wants you to trust in Him.

Trust in His love

We do not return to God because we are perfect.

We return because we know He loves us and we want to walk close to Him again.

An offering born from love

Giving can also be a beautiful way to express love to God.

We can share our time, our belongings, our talents, or help someone in need.

But we must remember something:

the most important value is not in the size of what we give, but in the heart with which we do it.

Something small given with love can be much more meaningful than something large given without sincerity.

That is why we can ask ourselves:

“Lord, how is my heart when I do this?”

đź’› Phrase to remember

God does not only look at what you have in your hands; He looks at the love you have in your heart.

And if you ever feel that you have drifted away:

No matter how far your heart feels; if you return to Jesus sincerely, you can draw close to God again.

🙏 Prayer to return to God

Lord Jesus,

thank you because You know my heart.

Forgive me for the times I have been distracted, trusted more in other things, or drifted away from You.

Today I want to return.

Help me to speak with you sincerely, to listen to your Word, and to trust in you even when I am afraid.

I don't want to give you only my things.

I want to give you my love, my decisions, my mistakes, and my heart.

Teach me to live close to you every day.

Lord, I give you my heart.

Amen. đź’›
