Joseph and Forgiveness: A Bible Lesson to Teach Children to Forgive

Joseph and Forgiveness: A Bible Lesson to Teach Children to Forgive

Introduction

Forgiving is not always easy. Sometimes someone hurts us, treats us badly, ignores us, or does something that deeply wounds us. Children also experience these situations at home, at school, or with their friends.

The story of Joseph teaches us a precious truth: although other people may hurt us, God can transform pain into something good. Joseph had many reasons to hold anger in his heart, but he chose to forgive and trust God.

This Bible class is designed for parents, teachers, and Christian children's leaders who want to teach children that forgiveness frees the heart and helps us live according to God's will.

Class Summary

Joseph was the son of Jacob, and his brothers were jealous of him. Because of that jealousy, they sold him as a slave. Then Joseph went through very difficult times: he was falsely accused and was in prison. However, God never abandoned him.

Over time, God raised Joseph up, and he became governor of Egypt. Years later, his brothers needed help, and Joseph had the opportunity to take revenge. But instead of returning evil for evil, Joseph chose to forgive.

Joseph understood that although his brothers had intended to harm him, God had used everything for good.

Class Objective

To teach children that forgiveness frees the heart, that we should not live carrying anger or resentment, and that we can trust God to transform even painful situations into something good.

Base Bible Text

Genesis 50:20

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.

Main Teaching

Joseph experienced very painful situations. His own brothers hurt him, he was separated from his family, suffered injustices, and went through difficult times. But Joseph did not allow pain to rule his heart.

When his brothers stood before him, Joseph had the power to take revenge. However, he chose to forgive.

This story teaches us that forgiving does not mean saying that what was wrong was right. Forgiving means giving the pain to God and trusting that He can heal our heart.

Forgiveness does not always change what happened, but it does change what we carry inside. When we forgive, we stop carrying a heavy backpack in our heart.

God can even use difficult things to shape our character, teach us to trust Him, and bring blessing.

Practical application for children

Children may experience moments when they feel hurt:

At home, when a sibling bothers them, takes something from them, or speaks badly to them.

At school, when a friend excludes them, mocks them, or says something that hurts them.

In those moments, the Bible teaches us not to respond with revenge, but to ask God for help to forgive.

Forgiving does not mean that nothing happened. It means we decide not to hold hatred in our heart. It also means we can talk to a trusted adult when something hurts us, while letting God heal our inside.

A simple way to explain it to children is to say:

When we don’t forgive, our heart feels like a backpack full of stones. But when we forgive, God helps us let go of that weight.

Phrase to remember

Forgiving is trusting that God will do something good.

You can also repeat with the children:

Forgiveness frees my heart.

Questions to discuss

  1. What did Joseph’s brothers do?

  2. Did Joseph have reasons to be angry?

  3. What did Joseph decide to do when he saw his brothers again?

  4. What does it mean to forgive?

  5. Has someone ever done something to you that hurt?

  6. What can you do when a brother, friend, or classmate bothers you?

  7. Why do you think forgiveness helps us live in peace?

  8. How can God help us when we find it hard to forgive?

Moment of reflection

Ask the children to raise their completed heart and ask:

Does it feel lighter when you decide to forgive?

Then explain:

Forgiveness doesn't erase what happened, but it frees your heart. God wants to help you live without carrying anger, sadness, or revenge.

Final prayer

Lord, sometimes what others do hurts us. Sometimes we find it hard to forgive and we say words or show attitudes that do not please You. Today we want to learn from Joseph. Help us to forgive as he forgave. Remove anger from our hearts. Teach us to trust You, even when something hurts us. We believe that You can turn bad into something good. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Final statement to say together

With God's help, I will live His Word.
