Sometimes our heart can drift away from God without us realizing it. It doesn't always happen suddenly. Sometimes it starts when we stop praying, when we get tired of waiting, when we feel afraid, or when we seek security in things that cannot give us true peace.
Maybe on the outside we keep doing many things, but inside we feel that we are not as close to God as before. And that can happen to a child, a young person, a dad, or a mom. We all need to remember that Jesus does not abandon us when we get distracted.
The good news is this: Jesus can help us return. He does not look at us with rejection when we come back sincerely. He calls us with love, listens to us, and guides our hearts back to God.
When the heart drifts away from God
In the Bible, we find a very important story. The people of Israel had seen the power of God. God had brought them out of Egypt, cared for them in the desert, and shown them His love in many ways.
But one day, while Moses was on the mountain talking with God, the people grew tired of waiting. They felt fear, doubt, and impatience. So they made a golden calf and began to trust in something they had made themselves.
The Bible says:
“They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them.” Exodus 32:8
The problem was not just the golden calf. The deeper problem was in the people's hearts. Their hearts had drifted away from God. They had stopped trusting Him and sought security in something that could not save them.
This teaches us something very important: the heart can drift away from God little by little. It is not always something visible at first. Sometimes it starts with small decisions, small neglects, or small fears that we let grow inside us.
Can Jesus help me return to God?
Yes. Jesus can help you return to God.
When you feel your heart is far away, Jesus does not say to you: “I don't want to listen to you anymore.” On the contrary, He calls you with love. Jesus wants you to return to talk with Him, to open your heart, and to trust again.
Jesus knows our distractions, our fears, and our struggles. He knows when we are tired, when we feel confused, or when we have sought peace in things that do not fill the heart.
But Jesus keeps loving. Jesus keeps calling. Jesus keeps waiting for us to return to Him.
Returning to God does not mean you have to have perfect words. It means approaching with a sincere heart and saying:
“Jesus, I need your help. I want to be close to God again.”
Signs that my heart may be drifting away
Sometimes we need to stop and look at our heart. Here are some simple signs that we might be drifting away from God:
1. Stopping prayer
When we stop talking to God, our heart gradually grows cold. Prayer helps us stay close to Him.
2. Stopping listening to the Word of God
The Bible guides us, corrects us, and reminds us who God is. When we stop listening to His Word, we can forget His way.
3. Letting fear rule more than faith
The people of Israel were afraid while waiting for Moses. Fear led them to make a bad decision. When fear rules more than faith, we can drift away from trust in God.
4. Seeking security in things that cannot save
Sometimes we think certain things will give us peace: objects, people, achievements, entertainment, or our own strength. But only God can truly fill our heart.
How can I return to God?
Returning to God is not complicated. Jesus invites us to come back sincerely.
Talk to Jesus
You can talk to Jesus at any time. You don’t need difficult words. You can tell Him what you feel, what worries you, and what you want to change.
Ask for forgiveness
When we recognize that we have drifted away, we can ask for forgiveness. God listens to the humble heart.
Open your heart
Do not hide what you feel. Jesus already knows your heart, but He wants you to come to Him with confidence.
Trust in His love
Jesus does not reject those who return sincerely. His love is greater than our distractions, our mistakes, and our fears.
Phrase to remember
No matter how far you feel your heart is; if you return to Jesus, He welcomes you with love.
Final prayer
Lord Jesus, today I want to draw near to God once again. Forgive me if my heart has been distracted, if I have stopped praying, if I have stopped listening to Your Word or if I have allowed fear to be greater than my faith.
Help me to return to You with a sincere heart. Teach me to trust in Your love, to listen to Your voice and to walk close to God once again.
Thank You because You do not reject me when I return. Thank You because You love me, seek me, and receive me with love.
Amen.
