Sometimes we might think that obeying "more or less" is enough. We might also believe that doing something good afterward can make up for a wrong decision.

The story of King Saul teaches us something very important:God wants us to listen to His Word and obey it from the heart.

This Bible class will help children understand that obeying God is not just about knowing what He says, but also about putting it into practice in our daily lives.

It is an ideal lesson to work on at home, in Sunday school, in children's groups, or in a Bible class.

📖 Summary of the story

Saul was king of Israel and God gave him a very clear instruction.

However, Saul decided not to fully comply with what God had commanded. He kept the best animals and also left the enemy king alive.

When the prophet Samuel arrived, Saul assured him that he had obeyed God.

But his obedience had been incomplete.

Saul thought he could offer those animals as a sacrifice to the Lord, but Samuel reminded him of a truth that remains very important to us:

God wants our obedience, not our excuses.

Samuel declared:

“Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

Saul needed to understand that we cannot substitute obedience with other actions that we consider good.

God desires a heart willing to listen to Him and follow His Word.

🎯 Class Objective

For the children to understand thatGod rejoices when we listen to His Word and decide to obey it.

At the end of the lesson, we aim for them to recognize simple and practical ways to obey God at home, at school, and in their daily lives.

📚 Base Bible Text

1 Samuel 15:22

“Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

To study the complete story along with older children, parents, or teachers, you can read1 Samuel 15.

❤️ Main Teaching

The story of Saul shows us that there is a big difference between fully obeying and only doing part of what we have been asked.

Saul knew what God had said, but he decided to change part of the instruction.

Then he tried to justify what he had done by saying that the animals could be used to offer sacrifices to God.

But Samuel taught him something fundamental:

We cannot replace obedience with excuses, gifts, or religious actions.

God looks at our heart.

He wants children and adults who learn to listen to His Word and are willing to live according to it.

This does not mean that we will never make mistakes. We can all make errors. When it happens, we can acknowledge it, ask God for forgiveness, learn, and do what is right again.

Obedience comes from a heart that loves God and trusts Him.

🏠 Practical Application

We can help children understand that obeying God is also shown in the small decisions of each day.

How can we obey God at home?

We can:

  • obey our parents;

  • tell the truth;

  • share with others;

  • help when someone needs it;

  • fulfill our responsibilities;

  • treat our family with love and respect.

How can we obey God at school?

We can:

  • respect our teachers;

  • do our homework responsibly;

  • not copy;

  • tell the truth;

  • treat our classmates well;

  • help someone who needs it.

Every small decision can become an opportunity to live out what God teaches us.

✨ Phrase to remember

“God is pleased when we obey.”

We can also say the main verse together:

“To obey is better than sacrifice.” — 1 Samuel 15:22

To help children memorize it, they can repeat it:

  • all together;

  • only the girls;

  • only the boys;

  • whispering;

  • using gestures.

Suggested gestures:

👂Obey:place your hand next to your ear. 👍Better:raise your thumb. 🙌Sacrifice:open your hands.

💬 Questions to discuss with the children

After telling the story, spend a few minutes talking.

  1. Who was Saul?

  2. What had God asked him?

  3. Did Saul obey completely?

  4. What things did he decide to keep?

  5. Who spoke to Saul about what he had done?

  6. What did Samuel teach him?

  7. What does the phrase "to obey is better than to sacrifice" mean to you?

  8. Why do you think we sometimes find it hard to obey?

  9. How can you obey God at home?

  10. How can you obey God at school?

  11. Is there something you can start obeying better this week?

Allow the children to answer freely. We are not only looking for correct answers but also helping them relate God's Word to their own lives.

🎯 Suggested activity: True or False

Prepare two areas in the classroom:

TRUE FALSE

Read different statements and ask the children to stand on the side they consider correct.

You can use these phrases:

  • Saul obeyed everything God said.

  • Samuel spoke to Saul.

  • God wants obedience.

  • Saul did exactly everything God commanded.

  • We can obey God by telling the truth.

  • Treating others well is also a way to obey God.

After each answer, take a few seconds to explain why it is true or false.

✏️ Craft

Give each child a sheet with the phrase:

“Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

Invite them to:

  • color the phrase;

  • decorate the sheet;

  • draw a situation related to obedience;

  • write a specific way they want to obey God during the week.

For example:

I will obey my parents.

At the end, they can voluntarily share what they wrote.

🙏 Closing prayer

Lord Jesus:

Thank you for teaching us today through Your Word.

Help us to listen to You and obey You.

Teach us to do what is right at home, at school, and everywhere.

When we make mistakes, help us to recognize them, ask for Your forgiveness, and do what pleases You again.

We want to live according to Your Word and show our love for You through our decisions.

In Jesus' name.

Amen.

🌟 Statement of Faith

Invite all the children to repeat:

With God's help, I will live by His Word.

❤️ For parents, teachers, and leaders

Saul's teaching can become an opportunity to talk with children about obedience that comes from love and not just from fear of consequences.

Our goal should not be to raise children who simply follow orders, but to help them know God, trust Him, and understand that His teachings are good.

When a child makes a mistake, we can take advantage of that moment to teach them to recognize their error, ask for forgiveness, correct what happened, and start again.

God's grace is also part of the learning process.

Obeying God is learning to trust that His way is good for us.
